In a group of 6, we have selected Nishinoyama House as our case study building. We are required to analyse and discuss in depth on the selected building , within the framework of Contextual Architecture.

Nishinoyama House is a ten-unit housing complex located at a quiet residential area in Omiya Nishinoyama , Kyoto. The architect Kazuyo Sejima designed according to the size, scale and height of the neighboring units and mountains which blends to the surrounding and reflects well to the vernacular architecture - Kyomachiya. The interconnecting spatial layout creates an environment that allows for the development of natural and positive relationship between residents alongside the privacy that separate units and gardens offer.

Project Part A: Contextual Architecture Study

Project part A is an individual project which we need to conduct analysis based on our selected building's Contextual Architecture elements which includes space organization and access hierarchy, sky line, compression and height, features related to the form of the building, building material and systems and image making elements.

Project Part B: Case Study Paper

Project part B is an group project which require us to do a more detailed case study on our selected building.

In a nutshell, I have a deeper understanding on the influences of Japanese culture and vernacular Japanese architecture (Kyomachiya) on contemporary architecture, Nishinoyama House. It is important to preserve a city character and yet remain its essence and main characteristics.
